4 – 6 Weeks Before The Move
- If you plan on using professional movers, book a date for your move and arrange time off work if possible.
- If friends and relatives are helping, make sure you ask them well in advance.
- Does your new house allow access for large appliances and pieces of furniture?
- Is there a lift? How many flights of stairs are there? Consider these things when asking your friends to help – professionals may be a better option if the move is going to be difficult.
- Do you need to advise Body Corporate of your move – check whether or not there are restrictions for moving on weekends.
2 Weeks Before The Move
- Arrange for disconnection and reconnection of electricity, gas, telephone and water – you can do this online
- Cancel your newspaper subscriptions, cleaning, gardening and other local services
Last Minute & Moving Day Hints
- Make or confirm key collection arrangements
- Pack a small box of items you’ll need for immediate use in your new home
- Pack another box with kitchen essentials for the move day such as a kettle, cutlery, mugs, tea, coffee and snacks
- Do a final check of all storage areas
- Check off all furniture and cartons against your inventory as they go into the truck
- Check that the house is securely locked as you leave
- Be sure to keep your valuables, personal effects and important papers with you
- Unpack bedding and make up beds as soon as possible
Mail Redirection
- Arrange for Australia Post to redirect your mail to your new address
- Advise organisations of your change of address
Packing
- Try to minimise the amount you need to move. Get rid of as many unused items as possible by donating them to charity or through garage sales.
- Start your packing early – it will take longer than you expect.
- Make sure you pack your items securely. Many removalists won’t carry items such as televisions or computers unless they are boxed.
- Complete an inventory of all items packed and label each box clearly so they end up in the room they need to be in.
- Check your insurance policy – will it cover the move?
- Make a list of items you’ll need available for the moving day, so that you don’t pack something essential
Cleaning Up
- Book professional cleaners if necessary
- If renting, arrange for carpet cleaners to come in after you have moved
- Clean out your fridge and freezer the day before you move
- Consider your safety when packing and moving.
