The Harbour City was one of 35 new cities to join the Rockefeller Foundation’s line-up of 100 Resilient Cities, a list of global cities that are working to weather the shocks and vulnerabilities of the future. Sydney joins familiar names like Paris, London, Chicago and Singapore.

100 Resilient Cities President Michael Berkowitz cited the city’s commitment to collaborative partnerships and approach to urban resilience in placing it on the list. The organisation’s official website also notes city officials’ response to issues such as heat waves, public health needs and power disruption, as well as its decentralised water management scheme and development of a top-quality transportation system.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore was honoured that the city’s forward-thinking approach had been recognised on the global stage.

“Leadership involves looking at the long term, and that is exactly what the City of Sydney does,” she said in a December 4 release.

“We are already working hard to prepare Sydney for a fast-changing future. We are putting together a climate change adaptation plan to look at the social, economic and physical impacts of climate change.”

As part of its inclusion, the 100 Resilient Cities will use its US$100 million budget to finance a chief resilience officer in Sydney for two years to help prepare Sydney for future stresses. In addition to this, the City of Sydney will develop a resilience strategy, for which they will have access to support services, and will share information with other cities in the network.

This will no doubt only put Sydney further on the radar of home buyers, both domestically and internationally. Just this year, Sydney was ranked in the top 10 most liveable cities in the world, and this latest honour will further strengthen its attraction to individuals looking to settle in an exciting, cosmopolitan city.
