The City of Sydney recently held a competition to determine the design of a new planned aquatic centre and recreational park in the heart of Green Square.

Ideas included an urban beach, wetlands and a network of connected pools that could be rearranged. Out of the 144 entries it received from international and domestic locations, the jury settled on five.

“The shortlisted entries promise inclusive spaces to exercise and relax, while adding local green touches to habitats lost during Zetland’s industrial expansion,” noted a June 17 release from the City of Sydney.

“We asked for a sustainable design that mingled swimming, running, training and spectating and could also be a place for nearby residents to relax and enjoy themselves,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore explained.

The aquatic centre and park is planned to help form the retail and cultural heart of the Green Square, a quickly growing part of the city. The centre will be located opposite what used to be the South Sydney Hospital.

The development is part of the effort to increase livability in Green Square. The area’s expansion has cost $8 billion, with $440 million committed over the next decade for infrastructure improvements and additional amenities. Some of the projects which will come out of this sum, include a new plaza, a library, as well as funding for public art and parks.

All of this is positioning Green Square as the new hotspot for Sydney residents, with many more expected to move to the southern precinct as time goes on. As the area becomes further populated, and its infrastructure, public facilities and amenities are further developed, property values both within and surrounding the area will likely rise.

If one wishes to take advantage of the growth set for Green Square, now is likely better than later.
